Live interview help / reference guide

Best AI interview copilot

Answer in brief

OphyAI is our editorial choice for an AI interview copilot: live help during Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Webex and phone interviews, in a browser, a Mac or Windows app, or the iPhone and Android apps. A good copilot hears each question, shows a short structure you can say in your own words, and stays out of your way. This guide explains how copilots work, how to set one up, and the rules to check first.

The recommendation reflects OphyAI's published features and the criteria on How we chose. It is not a measured ranking of every copilot.

What an AI interview copilot does

An AI interview copilot is software that listens to a live interview and suggests what to say while the call is happening. It turns the interviewer's speech into a live transcript, works out what kind of question it is, and shows a short answer outline: a structure, a few talking points, sometimes a line to open with. Most copilots use your resume and the job description, so the suggestions point to your own experience instead of generic advice.

A copilot is different from a mock interview tool. Practice tools ask you questions before the real thing and give feedback after each answer. A copilot works during the real interview. Many people use both: practice first, then keep a copilot open as a safety net for the moment their mind goes blank.

A copilot is not a script. Reading a long answer word for word sounds flat, and interviewers notice when your eyes track across the screen. The useful part is the structure and the reminder: which story fits this question, which number to mention, what to say first.

What to look for in a copilot

  • It runs where your interview runs. Check the meeting app (Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams or Webex), the computer you will use, and whether you are allowed to install software on it. A browser version helps on a locked-down work laptop. A phone app helps when you cannot install anything at all.
  • It hears the call without fuss. A desktop app can usually hear system audio directly. A browser or phone version listens through a microphone, so the call has to play from speakers.
  • Short, structured suggestions. You want an outline you can take in at a glance, not a wall of text. Look for a setting that controls response length.
  • Help for your round. Coding, system design and one-way video interviews need different help from a behavioral call. Check which plan includes them before you pay.
  • A free test on your own setup. You should be able to run a real session on your computer and meeting app before you buy.
  • Plain limits and refund terms. Be wary of any tool that promises nobody can ever see it. Read the refund rules first, since many plans are final once you start.

Desktop, browser or phone

The setup you pick matters more than most features. Here is the short version; the full desktop, browser or phone comparison walks through each one.

  • Desktop app. Best for most video calls. It hears the call through system audio, and on Mac and Windows the operating system can leave its window out of a screen share. You need to be allowed to install it.
  • Browser. Nothing to install. The answer shows in a small floating window. If you share your entire screen, that window can show, so share one tab or one window instead.
  • Phone. Runs on a separate device next to your laptop and listens through the phone's microphone. Nothing runs on the interview computer, but the call has to play out loud and the phone cannot see your screen.

Why OphyAI is the editorial choice

OphyAI covers all three setups in one account: a browser version with a private picture-in-picture window (Whisper Mode), a Mac and Windows desktop app that hears system audio, and iPhone and Android apps that run the live Copilot beside your laptop. It works with Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Webex and phone interviews, in 35 languages. During the call it tags each question (behavioral, technical or follow-up) and suggests a structure based on your resume and the job description.

Pro is $29 a month with 300 credits, which covers about 20 Standard sessions of up to 2 hours. Premium is $59 a month and adds help for coding, system design, one-way video interviews, customer service assessments and aptitude tests. Eligible new users can run a first Copilot session free for up to 15 minutes, with no card. The OphyAI profile lists what each plan includes and where OphyAI falls short.

Check the rules first

Employers' rules on AI help differ. Some allow it, some ban it, and many say nothing. Schools and online tests have their own rules too. If the rules ban AI help, do not use a copilot in that interview. If you are not sure, ask the recruiter. Breaking a stated rule can cost you the offer, or the job later.

Do not plan around being unseen. A desktop window left out of a screen share can still be seen by a webcam pointed at your screen, by someone in the room, or by proctoring software that checks running apps. The honest use of a copilot is as a prompt for structure and a memory aid, in interviews where that is allowed.

How to use a copilot well

  1. Practice first. A copilot cannot replace knowing your own stories. Rehearse your main examples out loud before the interview.
  2. Test your setup a day early. Same computer, same meeting app, same headphones or speakers. Use the setup checklist.
  3. Keep suggestions short. Set the copilot to short, simple answers. Read the outline, then look back at the camera and talk.
  4. Speak from real experience. If a suggestion mentions a skill or a number you do not have, skip it. Interviewers ask follow-up questions.
  5. Review afterwards. Look back at the questions you were asked and how you answered, and fix the weak spots before the next round.
