One-way video interviews and live AI help

Answer in brief

In a one-way video interview, questions appear on screen and a camera records your answers for reviewers to watch later. A copilot can read the written question and suggest a short answer, but the camera sees your face the whole time, so read the instructions and the employer rules before you use any help.

What a one-way video interview is

A one-way video interview has no live interviewer. You open a link, a question appears as text or a short video, a timer gives you time to think, and then the camera records your answer. Reviewers watch the recordings later. Platforms include HireVue and Spark Hire, and employers often use them for early rounds with many applicants.

The employer usually controls the settings: how long you get to prepare, how long each answer can be, and whether you get a retake. Many platforms let the employer set prep time and the number of retakes, so read the instructions screen for each interview rather than assuming.

Why live help is different here

In a live call, a copilot listens to a person. Here, the question is on your screen, so a copilot has to read it rather than hear it. And the camera records you for the entire answer.

That changes the trade-offs. A reviewer can replay your video, pause it and watch where your eyes go. A screen-capture setting that keeps a window out of a share does nothing about the camera. Reading a suggestion line by line shows up clearly on video.

Read the instructions and the rules first

Many one-way interviews state their rules on the first screen: answers must be your own, or no notes, or nothing beyond the time limit. Employers' rules differ, and they apply even though no one is watching live. Read them. If AI help is not allowed, do not use it, and practice beforehand instead. If the instructions say nothing and you are unsure, ask the recruiter.

How a copilot gets the question

Because the question is on screen, a one-way copilot reads it from the screen. In a browser, that usually means sharing the interview tab with the tool. A desktop app can read the screen directly when you press a hotkey or when a new question appears. When the question is a recorded video with no words on screen, a desktop tool listening to system audio can work from what it hears.

Test it on the platform's practice question, if there is one. Check that it reads the full question, including any second part such as "and what would you do differently?"

Shape answers for a timer

Timed answers punish rambling. A simple shape fits most questions:

  1. One-line answer. "The project I am proudest of is the billing rewrite."
  2. One example. What was going on and what you did, in three or four sentences.
  3. One result. A number or a clear outcome.
  4. One line to close. What you learned or why it matters for this job.

Use the prep time to choose the example, not to write a script. Watch the countdown, and land your result before time runs out, even if you skip the closing line.

Camera, light and eye line

  • Raise the camera to eye level; a stack of books under a laptop works.
  • Face a window or a lamp, so the light is in front of you, not behind.
  • Look at the lens when you speak, not at your own video.
  • Keep the background plain and the room quiet.
  • Do a test recording and watch it back once with the sound on.

Do a full practice run

Most of the stress in a one-way interview comes from the format, not the questions: the countdown, the red recording light, the silence. Remove the surprise with one full practice run the day before. Set a timer for 30 seconds of prep and two minutes of answer, record yourself on your phone or laptop, and answer five common questions without stopping. Watch two of them back. You will notice filler words, long openings and answers that never reach a result, and you can fix all three in one evening.

How OphyAI handles one-way interviews

OphyAI has a One-way Interview mode on the Premium plan ($59 a month). Each session uses 15 credits, or 25 on Advanced. It runs on the web in Chrome or Edge, where you share the interview tab, and in the Mac and Windows desktop app. It reads each written question as it appears on your screen and suggests a short answer to say. In the desktop app you can press Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + A to read the question now, and if the question plays as a video, it answers from what it hears. The free first Copilot session does not cover this mode.

OphyAI's own one-way interview guide is direct about the limit: the webcam records you for every answer, and the desktop window is hidden from screen capture, not from the camera. To rehearse instead, OphyAI's AI mock interview asks questions out loud and gives feedback with a transcript. See the OphyAI profile and setup checklist.

Questions and answers

Can a copilot help with a recorded video interview?

Some can read the written question on your screen and suggest a short answer. But the camera records you the whole time, and many one-way interviews say answers must be your own, so read the rules first and do not use help where it is banned.

Do one-way video interviews allow retakes?

It depends on the employer. Many platforms let the employer choose the prep time, the answer length and the number of retakes. The instructions screen for each interview tells you what you get.
